U16 Girls season story

The Gitch U16 Girls C2 Team completed very successful MYSA League play back in June. They finished off the season with a 4-1 victory over East Select. The team ended up at the top of the North District Group with eight wins, one draw and one loss. They earned 25 out of 30 points.
The team’s first goal was to earn promotion to C1 by earning more than 75% of available points. The
second goal was to win the league. Both goals were achieved. The team has players that come from four different high schools. But when they took to the pitch they played only for Gitchi Gummi Soccer Club, not Denfeld, East, Marshall, or Superior. The girls always
played for each other.
There were two related complications for the season that the players had to overcome. The first was a small city in Sweden called Vaxjo; the other was what the coaches called “Hell Week.” Because the team had five players traveling to Sweden during the season, the coaches chose to reschedule many league games so all the players were available. This leads us to “Hell Week.” The team finished the season with fours league games in four days. Not ideal or recommended, but how would the players respond to these demands? The response was winning all four games, with 20 goals for and only one against. The Coaches provided calm and steady guidance throughout, but had to set aside major differences; one supports Liverpool Football Club the other Manchester United. The Head Coach is Tom Corcoran, Assistant Coach R.C. Boheim.
The season continued with a second place finish in the Lake Superior Open, with the team reinforced with players from Kailee Katt’s U15 Team. The third goal for the season was to make it State Championships. The team earned their trip to State and achieved this goal with a 2-1 victory over Blaine in the Semi-Finals of State Qualifiers. This victory wasn’t easy. The game was decided in a shootout. Our keeper made some huge saves, and our shooters were cool and calm and got the job done. By reaching the Final, the girls guaranteed their trip to state because they had at minimum a wildcard spot in hand due to their excellent play in the league. The team was not successful in the Final, falling 0-1 to North Metro. The heat index was over 100 during this game, so with water breaks and each half shortened by ten minutes, there just wasn’t enough time to win.
The girls are excited to play in the State Championship next week. The team expects to do well, but regardless of results at State it has been an incredibly successful season. The Coaches are so proud of the players, and the players have represented Gitchi Gummi Soccer Club in the best possible way this season.
